The Day the Job Left Me from Africa

Five years ago today, my life took a turn I never could have scripted.

I had just landed in Rwanda, Africa—one of the biggest leaps of my life. My partner was already there, and despite the disruptions of COVID, I had decided to go anyway and meet him. I sold my car. Rented out my house. Made arrangements for my dog. Packed up my life and got on a plane.

It was bold. It was terrifying. But it was the kind of leap I thought was going to lead me into a new adventure while still tethered to the safety net of my corporate job.

Except… ten days in, the job left me.

No paycheck. No visa. No stability. Just me, a suitcase, and the weight of realizing I had stepped into the unknown in a much bigger way than I planned.

At the time, it felt like the ground had been ripped out from under me. I was scared. I didn’t know how I would make things work. The stability I’d clung to was gone, and all I had was uncertainty.

But looking back now, I can see it clearly: it was the universe’s way of forcing me to stop hiding. To stop playing small. To finally step into the business I had been quietly building on the side but was too scared to fully claim.

And let me tell you—those early days were not easy. I faced months without a reliable paycheck, endless self-doubt, and more than a few sleepless nights. But they were also the days that shaped me. They were the days that taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the power of betting on yourself.

Five years later, I can say this with full confidence: what felt like the worst thing that could happen was actually the best beginning I could have asked for.
